A good microscope is the single most important tool for board-level phone repair. It lets you inspect solder joints, find corrosion and lifted pads, and place tiny components accurately. This guide covers what actually matters when choosing one, so you can pick a setup that fits your bench and your budget.
The specs that matter
- Zoom range (7x-45x). Look for a continuous-zoom stereo microscope. Fixed-magnification scopes are cheaper but far less flexible.
- Stereo optics. Two separate light paths give real depth perception,essential for soldering and rework, where you judge height and angle constantly.
- Working distance. You need room for your soldering iron, hot air nozzle and tweezers under the objective. A 0.5x barlow lens extends the working distance to a comfortable ~165 mm.
- Boom stand vs pillar stand. A boom (double-arm) stand lets you swing the scope over larger boards and off the bench when not in use. A pillar stand is more stable and cheaper but limits reach.
- Lighting. A dimmable LED ring light is the standard. Glare on glossy boards is the usual complaint,an adjustable ring with a diffuser solves it.
Do you need a camera?
Add a trinocular head and a camera if you want to show the board on a monitor (easier on the neck for long sessions) or record repairs for customers or content. A simul-focal head keeps the camera and eyepieces focused together, which is the most comfortable setup of all. If you will only ever look through the eyepieces, a binocular stereo scope saves money.

What magnification do I need for phone repair?
A 7x-45x zoom range covers almost all mobile board work. Most technicians spend their time between 10x and 20x; the higher end is for inspecting micro-soldering joints and tiny ICs.
Stereo (binocular) or trinocular microscope?
Choose trinocular if you want to attach a camera for a monitor or for recording repairs,the third port takes the camera without blocking your eyepieces. If you never plan to record, a binocular stereo scope is cheaper and just as good to work under.
Do I need a barlow lens?
A 0.5x barlow lens increases the working distance between the objective and the board, giving you room for your iron and tweezers, and it also widens the field of view. It is one of the most worthwhile accessories.
Simul-focal vs trinocular,what is the difference?
On a simul-focal scope the camera and the eyepieces stay in focus at the same time, so you can switch between looking through the eyepieces and the screen without refocusing. Standard trinocular scopes focus the camera port separately.
