Do I really need a separate microscope lamp?

Yes. At high magnification the objective blocks most ambient light, so you end up working in the shadow of your own optics. A dedicated lamp is not a luxury on a board.

What magnification do I need for phone boards?

Roughly 7x to 45x covers almost all of it — low magnification to navigate the board, higher to work a specific pad. Anything much beyond that has too little working distance to get tools in.
