My speaker is quiet — is it definitely faulty?

Not necessarily. Clear the speaker mesh of dust and lint first, and check the phone is not in a case blocking it. Compacted debris accounts for a fair share of apparent speaker faults.

Does replacing it need soldering?

No. The loudspeaker is a module that unscrews and unclips, so it is a screwdriver and pry-tool job.
