Does replacing this need soldering?

No. On the iPhone 6s Plus the charging port is a flex assembly that unclips from the logic board, so it is a screwdriver-and-pry-tool job. Only much newer models and some iPads have the port bonded to the board.

My phone will not charge — is the port always the cause?

Not always. Clean the port first with isopropyl alcohol and a stiff brush, because compacted lint is the single most common cause. Also rule out the cable, the charger and the battery before ordering the part.

Does the port colour matter?

On this model the connector sits behind the chassis opening and is barely visible once assembled, so colour is cosmetic. Tell us the phone colour when ordering and we will match it where stock allows.
