Does replacing this need soldering?

No. On the iPhone 8 the charging port is a flex assembly that unclips from the logic board, so it is a screwdriver-and-pry-tool job. Only much newer models and some iPads have the port bonded to the board.

My phone will not charge — is the port always the cause?

Not always. Clean the port first with isopropyl alcohol and a stiff brush, because compacted lint is the single most common cause. Also rule out the cable, the charger and the battery before ordering the part.

Does the port colour matter?
