Will the phone show a battery warning with a replacement BMS?

Usually yes. A new board has not been authenticated by Apple for that phone, so iOS shows the "Important Battery Message" notice and hides Battery Health. Reusing the customer's original board is what avoids it — a replacement board is for when the original is physically damaged.

Do I need a spot welder?

It is strongly preferred. Prolonged iron heat on battery tabs risks damaging the cell, and a weak joint on a battery tab is a fire risk.
