My phone will not charge — is the port always the cause?

Not always. Clean the port with isopropyl alcohol and a stiff brush first, because compacted lint is the most common cause. Rule out the cable, charger and battery too.

Does this need soldering?

No. The charging flex unclips from the logic board, so it is a screwdriver and pry-tool job.
