Is practice on a board really necessary?

Yes. The skills that matter — how long hot air takes to release a shield, how much force lifts a pad — are learned by getting them wrong. Far better to get them wrong on a training board than on a customer's phone.

What should I practise first?

Removing and refitting shields, then passives, then a BGA. Build up in that order; each stage teaches the heat control the next one assumes.
