My proximity sensor also stopped working — same part?

Quite possibly. On this generation the front camera, proximity sensor and earpiece share one flex, so a single tear commonly produces all three symptoms.

Does this need soldering?

No. It is a plug-in module — a screwdriver and pry-tool job.
