My phone will not charge — is it always the port?

No. Clean the port with isopropyl alcohol and a stiff brush first, because compacted lint is the most common cause by a distance. Then rule out the cable, the charger and the battery.

Does replacing this need soldering?

No. The charging flex unclips from the logic board, so it is a screwdriver and pry-tool job.

Will Face ID or True Tone be affected?

No. Those live on the front sensor assembly and the display. Replacing the dock flex does not disturb either.
