Will this bring Face ID back?

If the fault is the circuit — a torn flex or broken trace, typically from a previous screen repair — yes. If the dot projector module itself is damaged, no. That part is paired to the phone at the factory.

How do I tell which it is?

Face ID that failed immediately after someone opened the phone is usually circuit damage. Face ID that failed on its own, or on a phone with a replaced sensor assembly, usually means the paired hardware.

Is this a battery tag-on?

No. A battery tag-on clears the battery service warning. This repairs the Face ID circuit — a different part for a different fault.
