Will this bring Face ID back?

If the fault is the circuit — a torn flex or a broken trace, typically from a previous screen repair — then yes. If the dot projector module itself is damaged, no. That part is paired to the phone at the factory and cannot be substituted.

How do I tell which it is?

Face ID that stopped working immediately after someone opened the phone is usually circuit damage. Face ID that failed on its own, or a phone with a replaced front sensor assembly, usually means the paired hardware.

Does it need soldering?

Yes, under magnification. It solders onto the existing flex, so it is fine board-level work rather than a plug-in swap.
