What is the difference between a cell and a full battery?

The cell is just the lithium pouch. A full battery adds the protection board and connector flex, so it plugs straight in. The cell is cheaper, but you have to move the board over from the old battery yourself.

Why would I choose a bare cell?

Because the original protection board carries the battery's identity. Reusing it means iOS keeps reporting Battery Health normally instead of showing the "Important Battery Message" service notice.

Can I attach the board with a soldering iron?

Spot welding is strongly preferred. Prolonged iron heat on the tabs can damage the cell, and a weak joint on a battery tab is a fire risk. If you are not set up for spot welding, buy the complete pack instead.
