How do I check if my tweezers are magnetised?

Touch the tips to a loose screw on the bench. If it lifts or even twitches, they are magnetised and should not go near a powered board.

Why ceramic rather than steel for soldering?

Steel sinks heat straight out of the joint you are trying to make, and shorts across pins if it slips. Ceramic does neither. It is brittle, though — grip with it, never pry.
