Why does wire diameter matter so much?

Because the wire has to pass through the adhesive between glass and polariser without pressing on the panel. At 0.03 mm it slides through; thicker wire loads the display and cracks it.

Do I need to heat the screen first?

Yes. Warm the assembly on a separator plate so the adhesive softens. Pulling wire through cold adhesive needs force, and force is what breaks panels.

How much wire does one screen use?

A short length per panel, and you discard it afterwards — wire that has been through adhesive is contaminated and will drag. A 100 m spool covers a great many screens.
