Why not use a cheap precision driver?

Because tip accuracy is what stops a screw head rounding. An oversized tip or a wobbling shaft rounds a phone screw on the first turn, and then you are drilling it out.

Will a powered driver strip threads?

It can if you drive the screw all the way home. Use power for the run and seat the last turn by hand — a motor cannot feel the point where soft aluminium gives.
