Why will my wick not draw solder?

Almost always because the flux has oxidised. Cut off the exposed end and try again; if it still will not draw, the roll has been open too long. Store wick sealed.

How do I avoid lifting a pad?

Lift the iron and the braid together the instant the solder wicks up. The damage happens in the seconds after the draw finishes, when the iron is still heating a pad with nothing left to absorb it.

Should I add extra flux?

A little liquid flux on a stubborn joint helps a lot, especially on lead-free solder. It costs nothing and it shortens the time the iron spends on the board.
