Is flux smoke actually harmful?

It is rosin and solvent vapour, and you are leaning directly over it for hours. Treat it as a real exposure and extract at the source — a filter across the room does very little.

Where should it sit on the bench?

Close to the work. Extraction and cooling both fall off sharply with distance, and a unit parked at the back of the bench is mostly decorative.

YCS Repair Fume Extractor Fan.

Flux smoke is rosin and solvent vapour, and it goes straight up into your face from a bench you are leaning over. Breathing it all day is a genuine occupational exposure, not a nuisance.

An extractor placed close to the joint catches it at the source, which is the only placement that actually works — a filter across the room does very little.
