Diagnostic and power equipment — boot cables that run a board from a bench supply, fine-tip meter probes, battery activation boards, power testers and desktop chargers. Measurement is what separates board repair from parts swapping.
Fine-tip probes matter more than most technicians expect. Standard meter probes are wider than the gaps between components on a phone board, so you end up touching two pads at once and the reading is meaningless. Running a board from a bench supply rather than a battery is also what makes current draw readable — and current draw identifies a short before you probe anything.
So the current you read is the board's own. A battery in circuit masks the draw, and it is also a hazard sitting next to a board you are heating and probing.
Because standard probe tips are wider than the gaps between components on a phone board. You touch two pads at once and the reading tells you nothing. Fine tips are what make board-level measurement trustworthy.
